Head full of ghosts novel set for film adaptation

Paul Tremblay's 2015 horror novel Head Full of Ghosts is advancing toward a film adaptation after years in development. Directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala are now attached, with filming slated to begin this month. The project features a notable cast in negotiations and production from established teams.

Paul Tremblay's psychological horror novel Head Full of Ghosts, which won the 2015 Bram Stoker Award, centers on the Barrett family, a middle-class suburban household disrupted when their 14-year-old daughter, Marjorie Barrett, suffers from an unexplained mental health issue. Unable to find medical solutions, the family suspects demonic possession and allows a reality TV production called The Possession to film an exorcism.

The adaptation has progressed through several creative changes since its inception. In 2018, Osgood Perkins was slated to direct. By 2020, Scott Cooper joined to rewrite and helm the project, with Margaret Qualley considered for the lead role. In 2024, the reins passed to Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, recognized for their 2014 film Goodnight Mommy.

Production is now moving forward, with filming expected to commence in March 2026. The film is being produced by Robert Downey Jr.'s Team Downey, The Allegiance Theater, and Fifth Season, while Lionsgate handles distribution. Actors David Harbour, Rebecca Hall, and Esmé Creed-Miles are in final talks to join the cast.

Tremblay expressed enthusiasm on Instagram, stating: “I’ve read the screenplay; it’s wild, and I love it. I can’t wait to see Franz and Fiala put it all on screen. Big thanks to @theallegiancetheater and @officialteamdowney and @dgams54 working so long and hard to make it into scary ass movie!”

An official Instagram page for the project has launched, offering updates as production advances.
