Indiana man gets 35 years for ex-wife shooting attempt

Brent Clayburn, 61, was sentenced Thursday to 35 years in prison for attempted murder after a violent attack on his ex-wife in Columbus, Indiana. A judge also imposed a concurrent 12-year term for criminal confinement with a deadly weapon.

A jury convicted Clayburn in April on both counts in Bartholomew County Court. The September 2024 incident began when he entered his ex-wife's home on Silver Fox Drive, struck her, and declared that one of them would die that night.

The woman fled to the garage and then toward a neighbor after breaking free. Clayburn fired seven shots at the garage door as the pair escaped. Police later recovered multiple firearms and ammunition from the house following a two-hour standoff.

Prosecutor Lindsey Holden credited the Columbus Police Department and her team for the outcome. She emphasized the office's focus on holding violent offenders accountable.
