Jagex removes Treasure Hunter microtransactions from RuneScape after fan vote

Developer Jagex has announced the removal of the controversial Treasure Hunter microtransactions from RuneScape 3, following a poll where over 120,000 players voted in favor. The feature, which allows players to buy keys for loot boxes containing XP and gold, will be axed on January 19, 2026. This marks the start of a new era for the MMORPG, with broader cuts to gameplay-impacting purchases.

Announcement Details

On November 12, 2025, Jagex revealed plans to eliminate Treasure Hunter from RuneScape 3, a decision driven by community feedback. Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy, known in-game as Mod North, stated in a video, "the community has spoken," confirming the removal alongside reductions in other microtransactions. These include over 225 direct XP and skilling items like Proteans and Dummies, which provide gameplay advantages.

Community Vote and Background

The poll surpassed 120,000 votes, exceeding the threshold for implementation and echoing the voting system in Old School RuneScape, launched in 2013 based on the 2007 version. That game requires 70% approval for major updates and has grown more popular than RuneScape 3, recently hitting over 241,000 concurrent players. Treasure Hunter, introduced as a daily key-based loot box system, has been criticized for harming the game's integrity. Earlier in June 2025, Bellamy acknowledged its negative impact, and Jagex tested various changes before this vote.

Future Plans

January 19, 2026, will launch an "integrity roadmap" addressing UI/UX improvements, visual identity, and core issues. Bellamy noted potential short-term revenue loss but emphasized long-term benefits: "some short-term pain is probably worth the restoration of the game." Upcoming content includes a new area called Havenhythe, signaling renewed focus on community-driven growth for the enduring MMO.
