James Cameron is finally spilling on that infamous 2013 Golden Globes zinger from Amy Poehler about his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow. The Titanic director called the joke an 'ignorant dig' in a recent New York Times interview. It's stirring up old Hollywood drama years later.
Oh honey, the tea is piping hot from the depths! James Cameron, the king of blockbusters, just dragged up Amy Poehler's savage 2013 Golden Globes roast. Back then, while hosting, Poehler was chatting about Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty and dropped: “When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.” Oof! 😬
Cameron, speaking to the New York Times, didn't hold back: “Amy Poehler’s remark was an ignorant dig, at an event which is supposed to be a celebration of cinema and filmmakers, not a roast. I’m pretty thick-skinned, and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but that went too far. The fact that people found it funny shows exactly what they think of me, even though they have no idea who I am or how I work.”
This isn't the first time Cameron and Bigelow's history has been meme'd. The exes were married from 1989 to 1991, and in the 2009-2010 awards season, they went head-to-head: her for The Hurt Locker, him for Avatar. Bigelow snagged the Best Director Oscar, and Cameron was all class about it. “I was the first one on my feet applauding. Kathryn and I thought the whole meta-narrative around us was pretty funny. I was a little concerned that it would just take away from her credibility as a filmmaker. It started to turn into a conversation that wasn’t about her film, and that bothered both of us,” he shared.
