Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has claimed police attempted to assassinate him during an attack on an opposition convoy heading to Kikuyu. The convoy carried Kalonzo, Rigathi Gachagua and Eugene Wamalwa. Officers fired live rounds, teargas and rubber bullets.
The opposition convoy was intercepted by armed police officers at the Gitaru–Kikuyu Interchange, just before entering Kikuyu town. According to a Wiper Party statement released on April 12, officers opened fire with live ammunition, teargas and rubber bullets against the convoy in broad daylight.
The convoy split into two groups, with one proceeding to Kikuyu where Gachagua held a rally despite the confrontation. Police later dispersed the gathering using teargas and live bullets, resulting in injuries and damage to vehicles.
“I am a Mau Mau son; I am not intimidated,” Gachagua declared amid supporters in the political stronghold of Kimani Ichung’wah, the area's MP. Kalonzo stated the assault targeted leaders, their vehicles and accompanying media crews, with some journalists injured and hospitalised.
The incident follows the burial of late Ol Kalau MP David Kiaraho, where Gachagua accused Ichung’wah of sponsoring goons in the Mount Kenya region.
