Launch Details

Letterboxd, the social platform for film enthusiasts with over 24 million members, is expanding into video rentals with the launch of its Video Store on December 10, 2025. Available in 23 countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and several European nations, the service will offer nine films at launch. These titles are curated into two shelves: 'Unreleased Gems' for films not previously available in those regions, and 'Lost & Found' for underseen favorites with strong community ratings.

The selections reflect genuine member demand, informed by watchlists, reviews, and behavioral data. New films are expected to be added regularly, starting with more before the end of 2025. Rentals will follow standard transactional video-on-demand pricing, varying by country and title. In the US, prices range from $3.99 to $19.99, with a 48-hour viewing window once playback begins.

Company Background and Vision

Founded in 2011 by New Zealanders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow, Letterboxd sold a 60% stake to Tiny in 2023, valuing it at over $50 million. CEO Buchanan stated, 'Video Store lets us act on that real demand, whether it’s helping a distributor unlock value from a forgotten gem... It’s our way of saying to the industry: Let’s harness this interest to get films to the people who want them most.' The service supports viewing on web, mobile, Apple TV, AirPlay, and Chromecast.
