Madelyn Cline in talks to join Glen Powell in Judd Apatow comedy

Madelyn Cline is in negotiations to star alongside Glen Powell in an untitled comedy directed by Judd Apatow at Universal Pictures. The film, co-written by Apatow and Powell, features Powell as a country-western star in decline and Cline as a pop star. It is scheduled for release on February 5, 2027.

Madelyn Cline, known for her breakout role in the Netflix series Outer Banks, is in talks to join Glen Powell in Judd Apatow's upcoming untitled comedy at Universal. Apatow is directing the project, which he co-wrote with Powell. Cristin Milioti has recently joined the cast as well.

In the story, Powell portrays a country-western star experiencing a career free-fall, while Cline would play a pop star. Sources indicate that Apatow and studio executives initially considered real-life pop stars for the role but expanded the search to auditions. Cline impressed during her recent meeting, leading to an offer.

The film is set for theatrical release on February 5, 2027. Production is overseen by Apatow through his Apatow Productions deal with Universal, alongside Powell and Dan Cohen via Barnstorm Films, and Kevin Misher through Misher Films. Universal's Erik Baiers and Jacqueline Garell are supervising the development.

Cline's rising profile stems from Outer Banks, which returned for its fourth season in the fall and topped Netflix charts immediately, staying in the Top 10 for over seven weeks. She will reprise her role in the fifth and final season, premiering in 2026. Recent projects include the Sony sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer in July, co-starring Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, and returning actors Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Jennifer Love Hewitt. In August, she led Amazon's romantic drama The Map That Leads to You opposite KJ Apa, directed by Lasse Hallström, which debuted at No. 1 on Prime Video. Upcoming is Lionsgate's Day Drinker with Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, directed by Marc Webb.

Cline is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, Bold Talent Agency, and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum.
