Makati, Quezon City named A-list cities for climate action

The cities of Makati and Quezon City have been included in the A-list for 2025 by the environmental group Carbon Disclosure Project for demonstrating climate leadership worldwide. They are among 120 cities that earned top scores, alongside New York City, Paris, London, and Tokyo. This recognition highlights ongoing achievements by these Metro Manila areas in tackling climate change.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a non-profit organization founded in 2000 and based in six countries, evaluated 738 cities worldwide for the previous year's round. To achieve an A grade, cities must disclose environmental data through CDP's platform, maintain a comprehensive city-wide emissions inventory, publish a climate action plan, conduct a full risk and vulnerability assessment, and set a clear climate adaptation goal.

According to the CDP, data from over 1,000 cities and 22,100 companies inform policymakers' earth-positive decisions. For Makati, this marks the third consecutive year earning an A. Mayor Nancy Binay stated, “By sharing our environmental data and progress with the global community, we hold ourselves accountable and contribute to the collective effort to address climate change.”

Meanwhile, Quezon City was the first Philippine city to receive this distinction in 2020 and was again named an A-list city in 2023. This accolade underscores these cities' commitment to climate resilience and international collaboration on environmental challenges.

Researchers from the University of Toronto analyzed emissions for 1033 cities, highlighting the need for radical changes in building design and materials amid growing housing demands. The findings emphasize efficient multi-unit housing and better resource use over simplistic solutions like widespread wood construction.
