Man sentenced for rape ten years later in Uppsala

A man in his 30s has been sentenced to prison for a 2015 rape in Uppsala. Another man is acquitted in the same case, but prosecutors plan to appeal. The investigation was reopened late in 2024 after being dropped earlier.

In August 2015, a man in his 30s allegedly had intercourse with a woman in an apartment in Gottsunda, Uppsala, while she was sleeping and intoxicated. The woman called the police immediately after the incident, and an investigation began. The indictment described her as particularly vulnerable due to her condition.

The investigation was closed in March 2016 due to lack of evidence. Late in 2024, the case was reopened following a discovery eight years later, leading to both men being detained in June 2025. One man was later released after review by the Svea Court of Appeal. Charges were filed in early September 2025 against the two men suspected of the rape.

On Friday, November 14, 2025, Uppsala District Court issued the verdict. The man in his 30s is sentenced for rape to one year and six months in prison. He must also pay 140,000 Swedish kronor in damages to the woman plus interest. The court applied the law in effect in 2015, where the minimum sentence was two years, but reduced it by six months considering the long time since the crime.

The other man, in his 40s, is acquitted by a divided district court. Prosecutor Joakim Gustafsson states in a press release: ”We can state that the district court has fully followed the prosecutor's line regarding the defendant in his 30s and sentences him for rape. As for the defendant in his 40s who was acquitted by a divided district court, we can already say that we will appeal the verdict in that part.”
