Former Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi has signaled his intention to join Rigathi Gachagua's Democratic Change Party ahead of the 2027 elections. He made the remarks at the burial of MP James Gakuya's mother in Murang'a County. This comes after his resignation from the UDA party in 2024.
Nelson Havi, former president of the Law Society of Kenya, expressed his loyalty to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at the burial of MP James Gakuya's mother in Murang'a County on January 3, 2026. The event was also attended by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who serves as ODM Secretary General. Havi hinted at a possible political reunion under Gachagua's Democratic Change Party banner, stating, "When we were in the quest of putting the current government in power, MP Gakuya was our chairman, and the former Deputy President, who was our deputy party leader when he says that we go a certain direction, we will follow."
Havi had joined the UDA party in 2021 after being welcomed by then-Deputy President William Ruto, but he unsuccessfully contested the Westlands parliamentary seat in the 2022 general elections. He resigned from UDA on November 7, 2024, in a letter addressed to UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar and copied to the Registrar of Political Parties, Mr. John Cox Lorionokou. The letter read, "I hereby give notice of resignation as a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) effective today, in accordance with Section 14 of The Political Parties Act, Cap 7D of the Laws of Kenya."
Now, Havi is setting his sights on vying for the Westlands seat again in the 2027 elections. The current Westlands MP, Tim Wanyonyi of ODM, is reportedly planning to contest the Bungoma gubernatorial seat, potentially opening the constituency for new contenders. Havi's potential move to DCP could bolster Gachagua's political influence in Nairobi ahead of the next polls.
