Nine people were wounded in a shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona, early Sunday morning. Police shot and wounded the suspected gunman at the scene. All victims and the suspect were hospitalized.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. local time. Officers patrolling the area heard gunfire and responded immediately, according to Tucson Police Department spokesman Frank Magos.
Magos said officers gave repeated commands to the adult male suspect before one fired, striking him. The suspect was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. All nine victims were adults, many shot in their extremities and listed in critical condition.
The Pima County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the shooting. Tucson police are conducting an internal review of the officer-involved shooting. All responding officers were equipped with body cameras.
Magos noted that the crime scene is large and the investigation will take significant time. The suspect's identity is known to police but has not been released publicly.
