Legendary New Wave of British Heavy Metal band More has unveiled 'Spirits of War,' the lead single from their upcoming album 'Destructor,' accompanied by a lyric video. The album, set for release on March 6, 2026, marks the final production effort by the late Chris Tsangarides. This track serves as a tribute to the influential producer who passed away in 2017.
Formed in London in 1979 originally as Defender, More quickly rose in the NWOBHM scene with their debut album 'Warhead' in 1981 on Atlantic Records. They toured alongside Iron Maiden during the 'Killers' era and performed at Monsters of Rock. Their follow-up, 'Blood & Thunder' in 1982, solidified their reputation for blistering riffs and gritty hooks.
'Destructor,' the band's long-awaited third full-length album comprising ten tracks, was produced by Chris Tsangarides, known for his work with Judas Priest, King Diamond, Helloween, and Yngwie Malmsteen. The final mixes were delivered from his Ecology Rooms studio on the eve of his death in January 2017. Tsangarides applied his Vortex system to the guitar work, enhancing the band's raw energy.
Bassist Baz Nicholls explained the choice of 'Spirits of War' as the single: "While preparing 'Destructor' for release, MORE began introducing new material into their live set. One song quickly separated itself from the rest. Each time it was played, 'Spirits Of War' drew the strongest reaction from the crowd, with audiences instinctively singing along to its unmistakable 'Valhalla' chorus chant. It soon became clear that 'Spirits Of War' wasn't just another track from the album — it was becoming a MORE anthem. This track really sets the tone for the whole album — it's a warrior anthem in every sense. It was one of Chris Tsangarides's favorites, which makes it feel like a fitting tribute to him. His spirit and influence run through this record, and this song captures that perfectly."
The mixes were rediscovered by Nicholls from studio equipment after the facility closed and saved to a USB drive. Mastering was handled by Maor Appelbaum in Los Angeles, a frequent Tsangarides collaborator, completing the project in 2025. More has established Warhead Music LLP for the release, supported by executive producer Dan McConomy and distributed digitally via The Orchard on March 6, 2026. A limited-edition signed CD digipack is available online.
The current lineup includes Baz Nicholls on bass, Peter Welsh on guitar, Steve Rix on drums, and Mike Freeland on vocals. Despite lineup changes over the decades—including guitarist Laurie Mansworth forming Airrace and various vocalists—More endures as a vital force in metal.
