Olaf Scholz urges firewall against AfD

Former Chancellor Olaf Scholz called to maintain the firewall against the AfD. At the same time, a proposal by former Minister President Torsten Albig sparked debate within the SPD.

Scholz stressed in a video on the anniversary of the Basic Law that no democratic state could be made with the AfD. He criticized calls that could make CDU and CSU dependent on AfD support.

Albig had previously recommended minority governments tolerated by the AfD in the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung and pointed to Denmark. He said old voters must not be walled in.

Within the SPD, Albig faced sharp criticism, for example from Jochen Ott. The AfD, however, welcomed the remarks.
