Wilde shared the details during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast. She explained that she contacted Anderson after watching the documentary Pamela, A Love Story and received the message that the most rebellious thing one can do is stay soft.
The director recalled the difficulty of remaining silent while facing what she called a disproportionately intense backlash. She noted that the pressure made it hard to promote the movie on behalf of the cast and crew who worked through the COVID pandemic.
Anderson, who had faced her own career controversies, offered perspective drawn from her experiences. Wilde said the guidance encouraged her to avoid becoming hardened by the situation.
