Kenya's opposition Azimio la Umoja coalition, recently restructured under new leader Kalonzo Musyoka, has proposed renaming itself to Komboa Kenya Alliance to unite forces against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections. Wiper leader Kalonzo confirmed the discussions on Citizen TV, aiming to leverage existing structures and sidestep potential government delays in new registrations.
Building on February's leadership changes that appointed Kalonzo Musyoka as Azimio la Umoja leader, the opposition coalition is now considering a rebrand to Komboa Kenya Alliance. Musyoka stated on Citizen TV: “There is a proposal on the table to change Azimio. I suggest it be Komboa Kenya to bring all opposition forces under one umbrella.”
The move would utilize Azimio's current registration to avoid lengthy fresh processes that could be obstructed by authorities. It has quiet support from former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who backed Musyoka's leadership appointment.
Expected participants include Martha Karua's PLP (already in), Rigathi Gachagua's DCP, Jubilee, Wiper, PNU, DP, and DAP-Kenya.
Analysts view it as a youth-focused refresh on issues like cost of living. Dr. Isaac Gichuki sees it as strategic reimaging, while Peter Katana stresses the need for genuine leader unity.
