Paizo increases prices for digital Pathfinder books

Paizo has raised prices for several digital Pathfinder products by up to 50% due to rising production and operational costs. The changes, announced on March 5, affect core rulebooks and certain adventure paths. CEO Jim Butler stated that the company had held off on adjustments for over three years.

On March 5, Paizo CEO Jim Butler announced price increases for various digital Pathfinder books, marking the first such adjustment in more than three years. Butler explained in a company blog post that the hikes stem from escalating development, art, and production costs, as well as broader expenses including printing, tariffs, shipping, healthcare, wages, warehousing, and technology. "We've worked hard to hold the line as long as possible, even as development, art, and production costs have continued to rise," Butler wrote.

The affected categories include core rulebooks such as the Pathfinder and Starfinder Player Core, which rise from $19.99 to $29.99—a 50% increase. Similarly, 128-page adventures will cost $29.99, up from $19.99, while 256-page adventures increase from $39.99 to $49.99. For context, the new price for the Pathfinder Player Core PDF matches that of the digital D&D Player's Handbook, though a 256-page Pathfinder Adventure Path now exceeds comparable D&D campaigns on D&D Beyond by $20.

Not all digital products are impacted; smaller Adventure Paths, maps, play accessories, Society Scenarios, and Lost Omens books remain at their current prices. Butler acknowledged the unpopularity of the changes, telling Wargamer, "We know that price increases are never good news for gamers." He added that Paizo is exploring ways to mitigate future rises.

Online reactions have been largely negative, particularly following recent changes to Paizo's webstore that ended PDF bundles with virtual tabletop partners like Fanatical. Addressing this, Butler noted, "I'm reading through all the comments on Reddit and the Paizo Forums, and I take that feedback to heart." He assured customers that bundles will return soon, with print options already available and digital/VTT bundles forthcoming. In the interim, subscriptions to product lines offer free PDFs and early access.
