Police teargas Rigathi Gachagua at Narok campaign event

Tensions flared in Narok town on November 24, 2025, when police used teargas to disrupt a campaign rally led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The incident occurred as Gachagua supported his party's candidate ahead of by-elections. No injuries were reported despite the chaos.

On Monday, November 24, 2025, disorder broke out in Narok town during the final day of campaigning before the November 27 by-elections. Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), arrived to endorse MCA aspirant Douglas Masikonde for the Narok Ward seat. Authorities had set up a roadblock and deployed a significant police force to prevent his entry, but Gachagua, wearing a protective black helmet, pushed through to address the crowd.

Just five minutes into his speech, as residents chanted slogans against the government, officers fired teargas canisters toward Gachagua's convoy. The former Deputy President and his supporters fled the area amid the dispersal efforts. Local youth stood firm, prepared to confront the anti-riot police to hear the address.

In a subsequent statement, Gachagua accused the regime of orchestrating the interference. "Clear instructions had been issued by this cowardly and brutal regime to block me and my entourage from accessing Narok Town to campaign for the DCP Candidate for Narok Ward Hon. Douglas Masikonde," he claimed. He further rallied supporters, stating, "The people, a people united, are stronger than all roadblocks, than all bullets, than all stones, than all teargas you have in store and high seas and than any dictator in the world. No amount of blood money, police brutality or police excessive force will cow or intimidate the people of the Republic of Kenya."

The Narok Town Ward contest pits DCP against the ruling United Democratic Alliance's candidate, Robert Kanyinge Ole Kudate. This clash highlights broader rivalries, including in areas like Mbeere North, though the focus remains on the local disruption.
