Police use teargas to disperse protesters over Tinderet MP aspirant's disappearance

Police used teargas to disperse residents in Maraba, Tinderet constituency, protesting the unexplained disappearance of MP aspirant Shadrack Maritim. Maritim went missing on October 27 during his morning run and has not been located. Locals have held demonstrations demanding answers from authorities.

In Maraba, Tinderet constituency, police lobbed teargas at protesters seeking answers over the disappearance of MP aspirant Shadrack Maritim. Maritim has been missing since October 27, a Monday, around 6am, when he went for his routine morning run and never returned. According to a missing poster, he vanished in Cheplaskei, Uasin Gishu County, an area near Eldoret City. He left without his phone and has had no contact with family or friends since.

His family stated: "He went for his routine morning run and never returned. We are extremely worried. Please help us find him." He was last seen wearing a grey track jacket, grey sneakers, and a pair of bluish track trousers. Protesters carried twigs and banners, burned bonfires, blew vuvuzelas, and squatted on the ground to evade police efforts to disperse them.

This was the second protest; one occurred on November 1 at the Maraba trading centre. Hours earlier, Nandi County politicians led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly visited Langas Police Station in Eldoret to follow up on the investigation. Melly said: “Following the unfortunate disappearance of Shadrack Maritim (Captain) since Monday, today, together with my fellow leaders and family members, we visited Langas Police Station to follow up with the authorities on the progress of investigations.”

Some political opponents suggest the disappearance might be faked for sympathy, but his family and supporters continue demanding clarity.
