Prince Hisahito visits Kyoto mausoleums to report coming-of-age

Prince Hisahito of the Japanese imperial family visited the mausoleums of Emperor Meiji and Emperor Komei in Kyoto on February 27, 2026, to report the completion of his coming-of-age ceremony from last September. The visit was private during his university spring break, and he performed rituals in morning dress.

Visit Details

Prince Hisahito arrived at the mausoleum of Emperor Meiji in Fushimi Ward shortly after 2 p.m. on February 27, dressed in a morning coat and carrying a top hat. He proceeded slowly, offered a tamagushi sacred tree branch, and bowed. He then visited the mausoleum of Emperor Komei in Higashiyama Ward shortly after 3:30 p.m., performing similar rituals. He also worshipped at the adjacent mausoleums of Empress Shoken, consort of Emperor Meiji, and Empress Eisho, consort of Emperor Komei.

The visit was private, taking place during the prince's university spring break. Prince Hisahito, son of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, will stay in Kyoto until Friday.

This trip follows his coming-of-age ceremony in September 2025. After the ceremony, he visited the mausoleums of Emperors Showa and Taisho, and he has also paid respects at the mausoleum of Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor.

The visits to the mausoleums are part of the imperial family's traditional practices, serving to report significant life events to ancestors.
