The Texas Rangers announced on Thursday the acquisition of left-handed starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore from the Washington Nationals in a multi-prospect swap. This move addresses Texas's need for rotational depth following a 2025 season where their pitching staff led Major League Baseball with a 3.41 ERA.
Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young emphasized the strategic fit, stating, “Certainly, pitching has been a focus for us, and we feel like adding a talented pitcher at the level of MacKenzie makes us a really good pitching staff.” He added that the rotation now ranks among the league's best, positioning the team for another World Series pursuit. General manager Ross Fenstermaker praised the opportunity: “Any time you have an opportunity to acquire a 27-year-old All-Star, left-handed starter like MacKenzie Gore, you gotta go in.”
Gore, selected third overall in the 2017 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, joined the Nationals in the 2022 Juan Soto trade. In 2025, his first All-Star season, he posted a 5-15 record with a 4.17 ERA over 30 starts for the 96-loss Nationals, striking out a career-high 185 batters in 159 2/3 innings. He excelled early with a 3.02 ERA before the All-Star break but struggled later due to shoulder fatigue, finishing with a 6.75 ERA in the second half. Gore's arsenal includes a mid-90s fastball, curveball, slider, changeup, and cutter, though command issues persist with career walk rates near four per nine innings.
The Nationals, under new president of baseball operations Paul Toboni, receive shortstop Gavin Fien (Rangers' No. 2 prospect and 2025 first-round pick at No. 12), right-hander Alejandro Rosario (No. 6), infielder Devin Fitz-Gerald (No. 12), outfielder Yeremy Cabrera (No. 16), and first baseman/outfielder Abimelec Ortiz (No. 18).
