Speculation is building about Apple's iPhone 18 series, expected in 2026, with potential design tweaks and camera upgrades. Reports suggest a split release schedule and new features like under-display Face ID. While details remain unconfirmed, leaks point to enhanced photography and connectivity options.
Apple's iPhone 17 lineup launched on September 19, but attention is already turning to the iPhone 18 series slated for 2026. According to leaks from Bloomberg and others, the company might deviate from its traditional fall release, launching the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in September 2026, while the base iPhone 18, a possible iPhone 18E, and iPhone Air 2 could follow in February or March 2027.
Design rumors indicate continuity in form factors, with screen sizes holding at 6.3 inches for the base model and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. The base iPhone 18 may feature a smaller camera bump on the back, whereas the Pro models retain a wider plateau for their three rear cameras. A leak from Weibo suggests the Pro could sport a subtle transparent finish on the rear glass and new colors: coffee brown, purple, and burgundy.
Display innovations are also in the mix. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg and Weibo user Digital Chat Station report a smaller Dynamic Island, potentially replaced by a pinhole cutout as Face ID sensors move under the screen. The Information corroborates this, noting the front camera would shift to the top left corner, eliminating the cutout entirely. Under-display cameras have historically produced lower-quality images, but Apple might refine the technology for better results.
Camera enhancements dominate the speculation. Macworld cites Digital Chat Station claiming the iPhone 18 Pro Max will include a variable aperture lens, akin to DSLRs, for improved depth of field and brightness control. The Information adds that at least one rear camera on the Pro will have a mechanical iris. Telephoto lenses on Pro models could gain faster apertures for superior low-light performance, and all iPhone 18 variants except the 18E are rumored to upgrade to 24-megapixel front cameras. The Camera Control button might simplify to pressure-sensing only.
Under the hood, the series is expected to use the A20 chip with a Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module process, integrating RAM for efficiency gains. A next-gen C2 modem promises better wireless, and satellite 5G support could enable full phone capabilities beyond emergencies, per The Information. No price hikes have leaked yet, offering some relief amid rising costs elsewhere.
These rumors highlight Apple's push to innovate ahead of the iPhone's 20th anniversary, though global competition from Samsung and Xiaomi remains fierce.
