Science fiction author Dan Simmons dies at 77

Dan Simmons, known for his science fiction works including the novel Hyperion, passed away on February 21, 2026, at the age of 77. He had previously worked as an educator in Colorado for nearly three decades.

Simmons lived in Longmont, Colorado, before retiring to write full time. His books later found new readers following the HBO adaptation of The Terror. A recent account recalled his generous personality and focus on literature, libraries and public education during his time as a teacher.
