At the Milano Ice Skating Arena in Milan, the men's 1,500-meter final on February 14 featured a chaotic race with nine skaters. Hwang Dae-heon added a silver medal four years after his gold in Beijing, bringing his career Olympic total to four. This marked South Korea's second short track medal at the Games and fifth overall, maintaining its lead in the discipline with 26 golds and 55 total medals.
In the 13 1/2-lap event, Hwang and fellow South Korean Shin Dong-min started from the back of the pack, with Canada's William Dandjinou leading early. With nine laps remaining, Steven Dubois crashed into the padding, creating space. Hwang accelerated on the outside with five laps left, as three more skaters fell. Shin slightly bumped Dandjinou late in the race, opening a path for Hwang to secure second place behind van 't Wout. Shin finished fourth.
Hwang competed amid an injury-plagued season, having sustained a knee injury in November last year and entering the Olympics at less than full strength. Despite this, he celebrated the medal, highlighting his resilience.
