Star Wars KOTOR 2 remake was in development until March 2025

A new report reveals that a full remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II was under development by Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games, codenamed 'Juliet,' until at least March 2025. The project aimed to modernize the 2004 RPG with updated graphics and gameplay while incorporating restored content from a fan mod. However, its current status remains unclear following a shift in developers.

Background on the Project

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and released in 2004, is a beloved RPG in the Star Wars universe. A port to Nintendo Switch in June 2022 promised additional DLC based on the fan-made Restored Content Mod (RCM), which added new dialogue, missions, and an alternate ending. That DLC never materialized due to legal issues, sparking a false advertising lawsuit against Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games.

Court documents from the lawsuit, as reported by Game File on December 8, 2025, have now uncovered details about a planned full remake. Codenamed 'Juliet,' the project was intended to overhaul the game for modern hardware. Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly stated in a March 2025 deposition: "'Juliet' was the codename for a project where we were going to do a full remake of KOTOR II... with modern art, modern gameplay... updated graphics and all those kinds of things."

Development Status and Challenges

The remake was discussed with Aspyr, the studio behind the Switch port (codenamed 'Capulet'), and was set to include RCM-inspired content like an extra mission with HK-47. However, Reilly noted that while 'Juliet' was on the roadmap, priorities shifted to the original KOTOR remake, handled by Saber Interactive.

Reports indicate development ceased by March 2025, with Aspyr no longer involved; Saber-owned Mad Head Games may have taken over. Neither Lucasfilm, Aspyr, nor Saber responded to inquiries, leaving the project's fate uncertain. This comes amid delays for the KOTOR remake, which Saber confirmed is still active despite earlier concerns in 2023.

Implications for Fans

The revelation highlights ongoing efforts to revive classic Star Wars titles but underscores legal and developmental hurdles. Fans awaiting restored content or a modern take on KOTOR II may need to wait longer for official updates.
