Student celebrations violate school law – municipalities risk fines

Uppsala high school students celebrate graduation on Friday despite the school year including only 174 school days, breaching the Education Act's minimum of 178 days. Several municipalities in the county may face fines according to SVT's review.

Enköping is the only municipality in Uppsala County complying with the law by holding graduation on June 12 and thereby reaching 178 school days. Other municipalities including Uppsala, Håbo, Knivsta, Tierp and Östhammar have scheduled the event for June 5. – It went wrong this year, says Eva Christiernin (S), chair of the education board in Uppsala. Skolverket school lawyer Anna Medin states that the agency views the shortfall seriously because teaching time is essential for students to meet educational goals. Uppsala Municipality plans next year’s graduation for June 11 to meet the legal requirement.
