TCN restores power to Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria restored one of two affected lines after a morning grid disturbance cut power to Lagos and surrounding areas on Thursday.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria announced on Thursday that the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line had been restored following a disturbance that began at about 8:19 a.m. The incident caused voltage instability on the national grid, leading to outages at some generating stations and loss of supply across Lagos and its environs.

The National Control Centre directed several generating companies to reduce output to stabilize system frequency. Minister of Power Chief Joseph Tegbe held an emergency meeting with TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator to coordinate the response.

“We are pleased to report that one of the affected lines, the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line which was opened during the incident, has already been restored and is currently transmitting bulk electricity,” the company stated. Work continues on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV line.

TCN apologized to affected consumers and said it remains committed to strengthening the grid to reduce future incidents.
