Troj/Ljungby punished after incident in BIK Karlskoga match

Disciplinary action has been taken against Troj/Ljungby following a controversial tackle and ensuing bench altercation during their recent match against BIK Karlskoga. Back Arvils Bergmanis received a two-match suspension, while material manager Terry Hägg was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct. The incident left two BIK players injured and unable to play in their next game.

The match between Troj/Ljungby and BIK Karlskoga turned contentious when Troj back Arvils Bergmanis tackled BIK captain Gustaf Thorell, forcing Thorell to leave the ice and miss the rest of the game. Forward Jonatan Harju also sustained an injury during the encounter, sidelining both players for BIK's upcoming match against Västerås on Wednesday. BIK's physical therapist Edwin Lindström confirmed after the game that the duo was 'okay under the circumstances' but would not be available immediately, pending further assessment.

Bergmanis was reported to the disciplinary committee for the tackle, which he described as an unfortunate collision without malicious intent. 'My arms and elbows were down, and my movement wasn't violent in any way,' he stated in his response. 'I've never been punished in a similar case before.' The committee imposed a two-match ban and a fine of 3,011 SEK, equivalent to one month's salary of 30,110 SEK.

Tensions escalated as Bergmanis left the ice, with shouting between the benches. Troj's material manager Terry Hägg positioned himself to protect his player amid threats from the BIK side, eventually gesturing with his middle finger toward opponents. Hägg explained, 'In pure frustration, I showed the finger, but it's nothing compared to the threats shouted.' He received a 2,500 SEK fine for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the committee noting that 'obscene gestures are not part of the sport' and unexcused by prior provocations.

Despite the loss, BIK Karlskoga celebrated positive off-ice developments, reaching their budget goal through fan events and extending assistant captain Gustaf Franzén's contract. Franzén expressed enthusiasm: 'I feel really good about extending. I thrive in Karlskoga, both in the team and around the club.' In a show of support, Troj fans launched a Swish campaign to cover Hägg's fine.
