Two men died when a light aircraft crashed into a residential area in Limburgerhof south of Mannheim. The plane had taken off from Aachen that morning. No residents were injured by debris.
The aircraft came down shortly after 11:30 a.m. on a property at the edge of town. Numerous pieces of wreckage scattered across a wide area and damaged several buildings. Witnesses reported hearing a bang or explosion in the air.
Police cordoned off the crash site. The main section of the plane rested in a garden, while other parts lodged in a fence or lay on paths and in front of houses. Investigators are examining the flight route and destination.
An information point for residents was set up at the Albert-Schweitzer-Haus and will remain open on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Police asked property owners not to move debris so it can be documented and secured.
A 66-year-old woman suffered minor injuries after falling while fleeing falling wreckage. There are no indications of other resident injuries.
