Kenya's weather department has announced that ongoing heavy rains are expected to reduce significantly by mid-May 2026. This signals the end of the March-April-May rainy season. However, regions like Mount Kenya and Lake Victoria Basin will see rains continue into June.
In its advisory issued on Friday, May 1, 2026, the Kenya Meteorological Department stated that the first week of May will continue to see heavy rains in several regions, but conditions are expected to improve in the second half of the month.
"The outlook for May indicates that the second half of the month is likely to be drier than average, implying the cessation of the March-April-May 2026 rainfall season," the statement said.
Areas such as Mount Kenya, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin and the Coast are expected to receive rains into June, though below average amounts. The end of the rains will usher in the cool and dry season, with very cold temperatures in the Highlands.
Kenyans have been urged to remain cautious against flooding, waterlogging and transport disruptions. The department warned of health risks like waterborne diseases and malaria, as well as crop damage and risks of river overflows and flash floods.
