This was the seventh consecutive loss to their perennial European rivals. Last season, Lyon won both group encounters, and previously there were three final defeats against the French record champions.
Ada Hegerberg established dominance in the first half with goals in the 25th and 30th minutes. Wolfsburg were fortunate with additional high-quality chances for the French side. Wendie Renard sealed the win with a penalty in the 72nd minute. Lineth Beerensteyn's goal in the 80th minute came too late for Wolfsburg. Jule Brand started for Lyon, having transferred from Wolfsburg in the summer after three years with the club.
Wolfsburg had just endured a 2:3 league loss to Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend. Their next Champions League match is against Manchester United in a week.
