Xi Jinping and Trump summit in Beijing overshadowed by Iran conflict

The anticipated meeting between the US and Chinese presidents will take place from May 13 to 15 in Beijing, though the encounter is marked by tensions surrounding the war between Iran and Washington.

Donald Trump has described the ceasefire with Iran as critical and incredibly weak after rejecting Tehran’s counteroffer, which he called “garbage” and “unacceptable.” Iran, for its part, described its response as generous and responsible, focused on lifting the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

US officials indicated that Trump will urge Xi Jinping to reduce Chinese support for Iran during the talks. The State Department imposed sanctions on Chinese companies for supplying images and defense systems to Iran, which Beijing rejected as unilateral and illegal measures.

In addition to Iran, the agenda includes Taiwan, advanced artificial intelligence models, and the possible extension of the trade truce between the two countries. The last meeting between the leaders took place in October in South Korea.
