Youth conservatives propose changing Swedish flag color

The Moderate Youth League (Muf) has adopted a proposal to revert the Swedish flag to a darker blue shade. The idea, put forward by Elsa Lappalainen from Muf Örebro, is driven by aesthetic reasons. It revives a color rejected back in 1906.

Earlier this autumn, the Moderate Youth League (Muf) adopted a proposal to change the blue color of the Swedish flag to a darker shade, as used over 100 years ago. The proposal was presented by Elsa Lappalainen, a member of Muf Örebro county, at the league's conference.

The current lighter blue, NCS 4055-R95B, and yellow NCS 0580-Y10R were officially adopted in 1906. The older, darker shade was rejected then because it was considered too gloomy, according to Svenska Dagbladet.

Lappalainen explains her motive aesthetically: “I think the darker blue looks more stylish and natural, so that's why I submitted the motion. Some like lighter, others darker, and I simply went with what looks best,” she tells the newspaper. Muf emphasizes that the proposal is not about nationalism or history, but pure aesthetics.

The Free Moderate Student Association (FMSF) also supports a color change. They decided on the matter three years ago, according to chairman Daniel Åkerman. “We like old things, holding onto traditions and being student-like. We believe it's a flag color to be proud of. One that looks back at our history,” he tells SvD.

It remains unclear how the proposal will proceed. Reports suggest Muf may not even raise it at the parent party's next conference.
