Armenian chess grandmaster Smbat Lputian was arrested on Friday as part of a criminal investigation into alleged fraud and forgery but was later released. Charges against the 68-year-old remain in place. The case involves his role at a chess research institute.

Kazakh-based Freedom Holding has acquired ChessBase, the leading chess software company, with a €5 million investment aimed at modernization and AI integration. The Hamburg-based firm will retain its headquarters and leadership. The deal was confirmed in a press release on Thursday.

The 2026 Greater LA School Chess League tournament in the Greater Los Angeles area raised nearly $7,000 for FIDE's Infinite Chess Project, which teaches chess to children with autism and developmental disabilities. Organized by the Kindness On Board Foundation and co-hosted by Diamond Bar High School Chess Club, the event saw participation grow to 46 teams from 32 schools.
