Following his March announcement and Rajya Sabha swearing-in on April 10, Nitish Kumar resigned as Bihar chief minister on April 14, paving the way for BJP leader Samrat Choudhary to become the NDA legislature party leader. Choudhary met Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to stake his claim and is set to take oath on April 15, with JD(U)'s Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Choudhary as deputy chief ministers.
The Janata Dal (United) national council on Sunday unanimously endorsed Nitish Kumar as the party’s national president. Leaders also declared his son Nishant Kumar, the Bihar health minister, as the future of the party.

JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar's son Nishant Kumar will embark on a yatra across Bihar starting from West Champaran next month. A decision on any key party post will be taken only after the yatra, sources said. Nishant is viewed as the party's long-term leader but has not yet assumed any major role.
