AAP criticizes Delhi government over O-Zone demolitions

The Aam Aadmi Party on June 15 accused the Delhi government of carrying out demolitions in the protected O-Zone despite prior assurances from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and BJP leaders.

The O-Zone area along the Yamuna floodplains from Wazirabad to Okhla covers 91 unauthorised colonies and nearly a dozen villages housing an estimated 15 lakh people. On June 9 the Chief Minister had stated that no existing structures would be demolished in the eco-sensitive zone.

AAP Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha addressed a press conference at the party headquarters. He said residents continue to face fear as bulldozers have razed several homes since the June 9 announcement.

Jha quoted residents of the 91 colonies as having lost peace of mind. He challenged the BJP government to issue an ordinance granting legal protection to the affected households.
