Åberg's strong start fades in Amen Corner

Ludvig Åberg started the final round of the US Masters with three birdies but lost momentum after water hazards on holes 12 and 13 in Amen Corner. He finished even par for the day and –3 total, preliminarily tied for 22nd. “It was probably the worst shot of the whole week,” Åberg said.

Ludvig Åberg opened Sunday's final round at Augusta National with birdie, birdie, birdie, quickly climbing into the top 10 on the leaderboard.

“When I came out this morning I tried to come out hot, which I did in a good way,” the Swedish golf star said.

The surge halted after eight straight pars. On the iconic hole 12 in Amen Corner, his tee shot found the water, resulting in a double bogey. “It was probably the worst shot of the whole week. We were a bit between clubs, it's of course a tricky hole (with the wind). Eleven we played driver into headwind and then approach into tailwind. I tried to play a little 8-iron, but hit it a bit fat and put it in the water,” Åberg explained.

On hole 13, the ball went into the water for the third time that week, but he saved par. A birdie on 15 was followed by bogeys on 16 and 17, yielding an even-par round and total of –3 – the same as he started the day. Åberg is preliminarily tied for 22nd, after previous Masters finishes of second and seventh.

He recorded 20 birdies for the week, more than before, but suffered too many mistakes. “Too many simple mistakes that bother me. Now that I'm standing here, I'm of course disappointed with the result,” he said. Rory McIlroy leads at –12 with six holes left, ahead of four players at –10. Alex Norén is tied for 31st at –1, his best Masters finish.
