At its second annual commemoration in Addis Ababa, the Adwa Victory Memorial described the historic battle as a matter of unity, honesty, and patriotism. Director Joseph Beko emphasized the need for peaceful resolution of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam issue and learning its lessons for future generations.
On February 5, 2018, in Addis Ababa, the Adwa Victory Memorial held discussions as part of its second annual generational handover and development program. Main director Dr. Joseph Beko stated that the Adwa Victory is a matter of unity, honesty, patriotism, and accountability.
Under the guiding idea "The Legacy of Adwa for Today's Ethiopia and Future Generations," the talks addressed practical aspects of generational handover and growth. Ethiopian Orthodox Church official Chief Director Abebaw Ayalew presented a study paper, stating that the current generation must learn from Adwa. He commended the memorial built in Addis Ababa and noted that numerous works are underway.
Dr. Joseph Beko remarked that the Adwa Victory serves as a guiding light in contemporary Ethiopia. He said political unrest and other issues are national matters that can be addressed through personal learning. Specifically on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute, he indicated efforts are being made for a peaceful resolution and stressed that as a historically sea-access nation, Ethiopia does not seek to regain sea access. Since it concerns national interest, all must participate, and capacity building in military, economic, and other areas is required, drawing from Adwa.
He called for other African countries to remember and embrace the Adwa Victory. Dr. Beko said the legacy imparts many lessons to the generation. He explained what actions are needed today and in the future, noting that Adwa, beyond being a military triumph, is a symbol of unity and related values. Ethiopians, by uniting their differences, established a strong foundation, and this lesson must be passed on.
