Argentina to attend US-convened summit of military chiefs

Argentina has confirmed its participation in a summit of chiefs of staff from 34 Western Hemisphere countries, convened by the United States for February 11 in Washington. The delegation will be led by Marcelo Dalle Nogare, recently appointed as Chief of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces. The aim is to bolster alliances against organized crime and regional threats.

The summit, initiated by the US Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Dan Caine, brings together high-ranking military leaders amid regional tensions, including the Venezuela conflict and global challenges such as the war in Ukraine. A US government statement notes that “defense leaders will explore the importance of strong alliances, ongoing cooperation, and joint efforts to counter criminal and terrorist organizations, as well as external actors that undermine regional security and stability”.

Marcelo Dalle Nogare, an Argentine Navy vice admiral who graduated from the Naval Military School in 1987, was appointed by President Javier Milei on the proposal of Defense Minister Carlos Presti. His background, including a degree in Naval Systems and a master's in Strategic Management and Technology, aligns with the summit's focus on planning, interoperability, and military power projection.

The gathering, unusual due to the attendance of envoys from key American and European nations like the United Kingdom, France, and Denmark, aims to enhance coordination against narcotrafficking and transnational crime, while exchanging information on common threats. Dalle Nogare's participation marks his first high-level international engagement and underscores the alignment between the Trump and Milei administrations on regional security.
