A traffic accident on Vespucio Sur Highway near La Granja claimed two lives on Sunday. The crash involved two smaller vehicles and a three-quarter truck, also causing several injuries, including a minor in serious condition.
Around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026, a serious accident occurred on Vespucio Sur Highway, specifically at the south access in La Granja commune, Santiago. According to preliminary details from Carabineros, two smaller vehicles and a three-quarter truck were involved in a chain collision.
Major Patricio Opazo of Carabineros told Teletrece that the incident began when one of the smaller vehicles performed a reverse maneuver. “And so the three-quarter truck fails to notice this maneuver and hits it from the rear, losing control of the vehicle. Finally, a third vehicle collides with it also from the rear,” Opazo recounted.
The crash resulted in two fatalities at the scene: a man and a woman. Several people also sustained injuries of varying severity, including a minor with serious wounds. All injured individuals were transferred to medical centers in southern La Granja.
Carabineros' Traffic Accident Investigation Section (SIAT) is on site working to clarify responsibilities in the incident. Such accidents on urban highways highlight the importance of caution during maneuvers like reversing, especially on high-speed roads.
