Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has acknowledged a difficult season as he prepares to return for the club's final seven Premier League games amid a relegation battle. Speaking after Argentina's 5-0 win over Zambia, Romero said he is 'not having the best time' at Spurs and must 'get myself together' to help the team. The comments came hours after Roberto De Zerbi's appointment as the club's third manager this season.
Cristian Romero returns to a Tottenham side struggling in the Premier League relegation zone. Spurs have lost six of their nine league games without the defender during the 2025/26 campaign. The team faces dropping into the bottom three if West Ham beats Wolves on April 10, with Romero's squad currently just above the Hammers and Nottingham Forest in the table. Roberto De Zerbi took over hours before Romero's international duty ended, becoming the third coach after Ange Postecoglou's sacking last June, Thomas Frank's dismissal in February, and Igor Tudor's brief interim stint. Romero described the situation bluntly after captaining Argentina to wins over Mauritania and Zambia at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, their final home friendlies before the 2026 World Cup. 'The truth is, I’m not having the best time there,' he said. 'I have to get myself together, I have to think about the club now and get into the Tottenham mindset… trying to get out of this bad situation we’re in. As always, I’ll give my all in every training session, every match and every effort to move forward.' Romero's season has been marred by disciplinary issues, including red cards against Liverpool and Manchester United, leading to a four-match ban in February. He has been sent off six times since debuting for Spurs, the most of any Premier League player in that period. Despite extending his contract to 2029 last August, his absences coincided with a poor run of form, including Champions League elimination by Atletico Madrid. Tottenham have not won a league game in 2026 and face Sunderland on April 12. Opta gives them a 27.1% chance of relegation, predicting survival at West Ham's expense.
