Defense ministry sets locations for 24 muster centers

The defense ministry has finalized locations for 24 new Bundeswehr muster centers across Germany. Young men born in 2008 and later must fill out a questionnaire to check their basic suitability for service, building on the questionnaire rollout that began in January.

The centers will be set up in 24 cities including Bonn, Dresden, Hamburg and Leipzig. Additional sites are planned in Bielefeld, Dortmund, Nuremberg and Würzburg. The facilities will be outside existing Bundeswehr properties and located in densely populated areas for easy access.

All centers will be assigned to one of the 15 existing career centers of the Bundeswehr, which handle coordination and oversight. The cities will thereby become new or renewed Bundeswehr locations.

Conscription remains voluntary. No one can be drafted against their will. Women may fill out the questionnaire on a voluntary basis.

The Selective Service System has moved forward with plans to automatically enroll draft-eligible men using federal data, replacing the current requirement that most men register themselves around their 18th birthday. The change was mandated by the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act and is under federal regulatory review, with officials indicating implementation is targeted for December 2026.

The new Wehrdienst-Modernisierungsgesetz requires men aged 17 to 45 to obtain prior approval from the Bundeswehr for stays abroad longer than three months. The Federal Ministry of Defence has confirmed this. However, approval is deemed granted as long as military service remains voluntary.
