Delhi chief minister sets one-month deadline for coaching centre fire audits

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has given coaching institutes in Delhi one month to complete fire audits and install safety equipment or face closure. The directive follows recent incidents involving student deaths in fires and building collapses.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the deadline on Saturday. She said institutes must finish mandatory fire audits, install required safety equipment and follow all safety rules within one month.

"One month. That is the deadline," Ms. Gupta stated. She added that the safety of children matters more than the number of coaching centres, and non-compliant institutes will face sealing.

Ms. Gupta asked students to report unsafe centres by message, email or phone. She assured that every complaint will receive action.

On Thursday, Education Minister Ashish Sood named the Municipal Corporation of Delhi as the agency for audits and inspections. Delhi has about 923 coaching centres. The steps follow a fire in Lucknow that killed 15 people and a building collapse near Saket Metro Station last month that killed five students.
