Demolition of tilted Kochi building deferred due to safety concerns

The demolition of a two-storey building tilted against another structure on M.G. Road in Kochi has been postponed following expert advice on safety measures.

The 60-year-old house tilted after a hydraulic jack gave way on July 7, 2026. The Kochi Corporation had issued an ultimatum requiring the owner to demolish it by July 10, but the work was deferred.

A structural stability expert advised that precautionary strengthening was needed to avoid risks to nearby buildings and workers. Strengthening began on July 10, with piecemeal dismantling scheduled to start on July 11.

Mayor V.K. Minimol stated that the process may take seven to 10 days using manual labour at the owner's expense. The engineering team will monitor the operation, and fines may apply if commitments are not met.
