Deportes Concepción eliminates Copiapó and advances to promotion playoff final

Deportes Concepción secured their spot in the promotion playoff final by drawing 1-1 with Deportes Copiapó in the semifinal return leg. This result gave the lilas a 2-1 aggregate victory, setting up a clash with Cobreloa for a place in Primera División. A key goal from Joaquín Larrivey proved decisive for the team from Concepción.

The return leg took place behind closed doors at Copiapó's Luis Valenzuela Hermosilla Stadium, due to a sanction for prior incidents against Universidad de Concepción. Deportes Copiapó took the lead in the 14th minute with a header from Carlos Salomón, a defender trained at Universidad Católica, off a corner kick. The goal put the hosts ahead temporarily, but Concepción displayed more attacking intent in the first half.

The visitors created several chances but struggled to convert. A shot from Ángel Gillard hit the post, Carlos Morales missed narrowly in the 30th, and a header from Larrivey was saved by goalkeeper Julio Fierro in the 36th. The second half maintained a low tempo, but Concepción kept pressing. In the 65th, Fierro stopped a shot from Sepúlveda.

The equalizer arrived in the 70th minute, as Argentine striker Joaquín Larrivey finished neatly after a low cross from Gillard, starting and ending the move. Copiapó gained an opportunity late on when Concepción was reduced to 10 men after captain Sebastián Silva's second yellow card in the 79th. Coach Patricio Almendra reorganized his side to hold firm, and the lilas preserved the draw.

In the first leg, with 20,000 fans at Ester Roa, Larrivey had scored from the penalty spot for a slim lead. Copiapó welcomed back Julio Fierro and Thomas Jones, but it wasn't enough. Concepción now faces Cobreloa, who beat San Marcos de Arica, in home-and-away ties for promotion to the top flight in 2026.
