Efforts underway to salvage drought-hit teff crop in Amhara

The Amhara region's agriculture bureau states that work is underway to salvage the teff crop affected by production shortages due to drought. Around 900,000 hectares of land have been planted with teff, and necessary technical support and assistance are being provided. Harvesting has begun prematurely to mitigate losses.

Addis Ababa, Hidar 26, 2018 (Fana) – Teff production in Ethiopia's Amhara region has been hit by shortages due to drought. Mandefro Aslake (Dr.), director of the bureau's crop development and protection, told Fana Digital that around 900,000 hectares of land have been planted with teff.

"Given the current crop conditions, harvesting has started prematurely, and necessary technical support and assistance are being provided to salvage the produce from further losses," Mandefro said.

They emphasized that the affected teff crop must be harvested carefully to preserve its moisture content. In particular, they advised taking precautions to avoid damage by not harvesting untimely. After harvesting, the grain should be stored elevated on wooden racks to prevent ground contact.

Mandefro Aslake (Dr.) stressed the need to dry the grain quickly, adding that using plastic sheets underneath during storage helps maintain quality and prevent losses. Agricultural experts are also monitoring and providing input on storage and technical support in major teff-producing areas.
