Egypt adopts international ISO 20022 standard for financial transfers

The Central Bank of Egypt announced that the ISO 20022 standard for SWIFT messaging in interbank financial transfers takes effect on 21 June 2026.

The Central Bank of Egypt announced the adoption of the international ISO 20022 standard across the Egyptian banking sector for SWIFT messaging in interbank financial transfers, effective 21 June 2026.

Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, emphasised that this initiative reflects ongoing efforts to advance and modernise the payments infrastructure by enhancing the efficiency of the interbank Real-Time Gross Settlement system.

The standard enables faster and more reliable payment processing while improving data quality through more granular and structured information. It also supports straight-through processing and strengthens compliance with anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism recommendations.

This upgrade places the Egyptian Real-Time Gross Settlement system among the most advanced settlement systems globally.
