SC Freiburg and Mainz 05 have reached the quarterfinals in their European competitions for the first time. Freiburg beat KRC Genk 5:1 in the Europa League, Mainz defeated Sigma Olomouc 2:0 in the Conference League. VfB Stuttgart was eliminated by FC Porto.
SC Freiburg won their Europa League round-of-16 second leg against KRC Genk 5:1 (2:1 HT) and reached the quarterfinals for the first time. After a 0:1 first-leg loss, goals came from Matthias Ginter (19'), Igor Matanovic (25'), Vincenzo Grifo (53', his record 106th competitive goal), Yuito Suzuki (56') and Maximilian Eggstein (79'). Matte Smets (39') scored for Genk. Coach Julian Schuster told RTL: “You get this feeling during the week. You could tell with the boys, they were fully there.” Freiburg face Celta Vigo in the quarterfinals on April 9 and 16, home first. Predecessor Christian Streich had exited in the round of 16 before.
