Generative fraud threatens industries including health sector

VIDA, an Indonesian digital identity provider, reaffirms its commitment to bolstering digital security amid rising generative fraud threats from AI. This technology creates indistinguishable fake realities, particularly in the health sector. Niki Luhur, VIDA's founder, stresses the need for validated digital identities as the new foundation of trust.

Jakarta, VIVA – VIDA reaffirms its commitment to strengthening national digital security and trust, as public service digitalization increases, including in the health sector. Niki Luhur, founder and group CEO of VIDA, states that the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology demands new ways to build digital trust.

“AI can create 'fake realities' that are increasingly hard to distinguish; validated digital identities become the new foundation of trust. VIDA is here to build trust by design, from identity to transactions, ensuring every digital interaction is safe and trustworthy from AI threats,” he said.

Digital transformation in healthcare is a global priority. According to WHO data (2023), more than 60 percent of countries have integrated digital health service strategies into national policies. In Indonesia, efforts to integrate patient data in real-time are underway alongside the public service digitalization agenda.

However, this progress also opens risks of data and personal identity misuse. Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK, 2024) data records losses from social and OTP-based fraud exceeding Rp2.5 trillion. The VIDA Fraud Intelligence Report 2025 shows that 97 percent of organizations in Indonesia have been targets of social engineering.

In the era of AI-powered phishing, the OTP mechanism designed three decades ago is increasingly vulnerable. This phenomenon marks the emergence of generative fraud, where AI is used to create fake identities or documents that are hard to distinguish. Deepfake cases in the Asia Pacific rose 1,550 percent in the last two years (2022–2023), with methods like voice cloning and video impersonation disguising as medical staff or officials to access health systems.

VIDA serves as a strategic digital trust enabler, ensuring only authorized individuals access medical data. "We position digital signatures not just as a compliance tool, but as a trust infrastructure supporting various industries, including health, guaranteeing identity, authorization, and audit trails across the digital ecosystem, from patient registration at hospitals to medical procedure approvals or insurance claims," Niki Luhur explained.
