Germany draws 0-0 with Spain in Nations League final first leg

Germany's women's football team drew 0-0 with world champions Spain in the first leg of the Nations League final. In front of around 40,000 fans in Kaiserslautern, they dominated at times but missed chances. The second leg in Madrid will decide the title.

In Kaiserslautern's Fritz-Walter-Stadion, Germany's women's football team faced Spain in the first leg of the Nations League final, ending in a goalless draw despite a strong performance. The match was a rematch of the Euro 2025 semi-final in July, where Spain won in extra time via Aitana Bonmatí.

Germany improved markedly: From the 20th minute, the hosts dominated, creating numerous chances. Klara Bühl hit the post (70th minute), while Franziska Kett and Jule Brand posed threats, but goalkeeper Cata Coll denied them. Nicole Anyomi, overlooked for the Euros, troubled Spain's defense with deep runs. Ann-Kathrin Berger barely had to act in the first half, as Spain produced no shots despite possession.

Coach Christian Wück expressed frustration over a Spanish substitution where the player crossed half the field: "Bei der Auswechslung will die Auswechselspielerin übers halbe Feld laufen. Vielleicht ist es so im internationalen Fußball." Still, he praised his side: "We know that we can not only keep up, but even impose our game against a team like Spain." Klara Bühl called the result "incredibly bitter" but looked forward to the "classic final."

Spain remained defensively solid but offensively uninspired. Esther González hit the post (53rd minute). The second leg is on Tuesday at Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano—Germany seeks its first title since the 2016 Olympic gold.
