Green Power Sweden hopes Dalarna municipalities approve wind power

Nils Grunditz, CEO of Green Power Sweden, urges Dalarna's municipalities to heed the government and approve wind power projects. He emphasizes wind power's role in climate transition and the government's 26 million kronor incentives for the region.

In an opinion piece in Dala-Demokraten, Nils Grunditz, CEO of Green Power Sweden, discusses the importance of wind power in Dalarna. Several current wind power projects in the region depend on municipal approval. Grunditz notes that the government views wind power as key for electrification and climate transition. One new onshore wind turbine can reduce climate emissions by about 12,600 tons, equivalent to emissions from 1,575 municipal residents' consumption, according to Naturvårdsverket. Each new TWh of fossil-free electricity production reduces emissions by at least 600,000 tons. The government has decided to allocate 710 million kronor for 2025 and 2026 to municipalities with wind power, of which 12 of Dalarna's 15 municipalities are expected to receive about 26 million kronor. The aim is to boost incentives for communes to approve more projects. Grunditz hopes municipalities will allow applications to proceed to environmental review, which would lower electricity prices, enhance industry competitiveness, improve energy security, and facilitate climate transition. He points out that fossil-free electricity is needed for sectors like steel, aviation, and electric vehicles.
